I've been going nuts trying to remember this really old game I used to play on my Tandy 1000SL back in 1990-1994.

Basically, you are the captain of a spaceship that seems to run into trouble quite a bit. Your responsibilities include managing navigation, piloting, defense, attack, engine problems, hull problems, staff, etc. I could be shady on some of the details, because it's been a while.

I remember a sense of urgency as you had to go from problem to problem and manage well before issues were compounded and disaster struck.

I have no idea what it's called. Has anyone actually played this game besides me, or am I just dreaming it up?

I think part of the name was 'commander'.

Wing... something... maybe?

Definitely not a Star Trek game, and certainly not Wing Commander.

It is quite similar to EGATrek, and that's a lead I'm currently following.

Some more memories are coming back to me. The primary colour that stands out to me for the game screens is cyan. I also remember that there was this alien creature that would normally report events to you. Also, you'd go from room to room in the spaceship in order to handle different things.

Get a quick answer by posting it in Yahoo questions.

They tend to get it fast with all those game maniacs out there

istari, what you describe sounds SO much like the EGATREK/VGATREK that I think they are what you are trying to remember, and I think that there was a cga grade version that might have been called TREK.

did the game have square grids  at local AND long range that the ship jumped/moved around on?

I've had a look at EGATrek, and I can confirm that it is not the game I played. I haven't been able to get a hold of VGATrek or just Trek to see either one fits the bill. I also ran across a game called PDTrek that I couldn't find even a screen shot of. Man this is frustrating!

istari, did you look in http://www.dosgamesonline.com, the site seems to list most if not all of the DOS era games that I remember seeing/selling in the 80's & early 90's, and I found it by googleing 'vga trek' and it lists BOTH egatrek & vgatrek, but apparently the vga trek was 8 years younger than egatrek and does look different.

Thanks for the links guys!

It seems VGA Trek is more commonly known as Visual Star Trek. I took a look, and sadly - not it.

From what I remember of the game though, it didn't really include much (if any) space exploration. It was more about handling problems onboard. But as I said, my memory is a little shaky on that (I would have been about 10 years old when I played it). What I do know however, is that I will recognise it as soon as I see it.

Hopefully though, someone comes across this thread that has a better memory than I do.

I know a game similar to that from ages ago.

I think it was called Sci 5 Trader though i cant find anything online about it so that might not be the name.

You had to select a crew, choose one of three destinations and then reach that destination with out being blown up.

Was great fun for the time.

It sounds somewhat like a game my uncle used to have, around that time, called Sundog.  You had a ship with lots of components, some of which started out broken and you had to find/buy/steal parts to fix it so that you could travel around shipping goods.  There was some combat (both in space and on land), and stuff was always breaking.

I recall a British Game, where you were Captain of a small vessel from some sector of space who seceded from the Earth Gouv. It start with an I if I recall correctly, can't recall the name, but it sounds like that

It might have been Sci 5 Trader as Dariune suggested, but I can't find any reference to it anywhere, and so I cannot confirm it.

I've checked up on every suggestion in this thread. Thanks everyone, but still no go.

The setup of the game reminds me of Galleons of Glory, where you were a captain of a boat, mostly interacting with crew as you explored.

No, it was definitely a spaceship. But the crew and ship interaction was pretty much the whole game (from memory). I have no idea if this game was even popular to be honest. I can't even remember where I got it from.
