Forum Update - September 24, 2010 - Karma/Ad-related (Updated again September 27, 2010)

I pushed a forum update today that has the following changes:

1. Disabled the ads on the WinCustomize forums to try and prevent the "Malware Detection" problems for Chrome and Firefox.

2. Karma is now universal across all sites.  This means that the karma number you now see in each post will be the same across all of the forums, and that giving someone karma means they will get it everywhere.  Let me know if you notice any issues with it.

3. Updated some of our back-end moderation tools.

4. Minor bug fixes.

Quoting Thoumsin,
No idea... all i know is that before i was with 57 karma... now 34... karma is not something that i check regulary... in fact, if these topic have not exist, i will not know about the drop...

EDIT : a other thing... have just check the Karma i have give... it is wrote "6 karma to 6 users" when in fact, it is 6 karma to 5 users!!!

Yes, the "users" number is actually a count of how many times you have received/given karma.  It's a bit confusing.  I think I'll just reword it to say "User has given 13 karma 5 times" or something.

Quoting Savyg,
I switched my EVDO modem from my router to a direct connection and it started up again

sigh

Thank you, I'll take a look and see what I can do.

I've tried to recreate the issue but am unable to.  I'm not really sure what could be causing the issue.  I assume you're running Windows 7?  Are you running 32- or 64-bit?  Do you have any apps that are installed on all the machines you are having this problem that you feel may be the cause?

I do run cFosSpeed on them all, which may or may not be having an effect, Win7 x64.

I would more suspect my 3g connection/modem causing problems, but it could be a combination of the two.

I don't have enough resources available to test since this is the only ISP I have access too, but I can try without cFosSpeed.

Not that, let me run a few other scenarios before I give up and point at the modem/ISP

Yeah I got nothing, can't make it go away.  It's vastly reduced if I use my Cradlepoint router, though I have no idea why (heck, when it comes to the EC168, they're probably the only ones who DO know all that's wrong with it)

It's a strange issue, as Javascript shouldn't just break randomly in certain situations.  Is your computer fairly modern and fast?  Have you tried running anti-spyware anti-virus?  Do you have any toolbars or addons/extensions to the browser itself?

Core i7 with 6 gigs of RAM, 4850, PCI Express X-Fi, RAIDed 1TB HDs, have had MS Security Essentials on since the box was set up, Bing toolbar is a recent addition just for the hell of it but usually I don't use them...VC#2008 Express, VC#2010 Express, Office 2010 64 bit Standard and that sums it up for the most part (I'm learning on 2008 so I can't get rid of it yet, unfortunately)

Fairly fresh install since I just did the RAID crap cause I was sick of waiting for SSD prices to come down

Yea, I don't see anything there that could be causing problems... I'm honestly at a loss as to what could be causing your problems.

Quoting Savyg,

How bizarre.  I think it stopped doing it after I hit Restore Advanced Settings on the Advanced config tab in IE.

Now I'm just as confused as I was before...but whatever works.

You said this was happening in Chrome too.  Is that still the case?

Now it's only doing it in Impulse.

I'm gonna let this one go.  It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Karma behaves weirdly.

I used 'Give karma' on post http://forums.elementalgame.com/398027, and instead increasing his karma, it actually decreased it (was +2, now +1), however in profile it lists 3 karma given and says its 1 total, http://forums.elementalgame.com/karma/4241220

The karma count has always been that way since the beginning. Karma is like that, it has its highs and lows. Karma will be what it will be, but eventually you will get what's coming to you.

In other words:The numbers will self-correct, don't sweat it.

Yes, the numbers will self correct (eg: I see it as +4 now).  However, I'll take a look and figure out why that would happen.

Quoting GunslingerBara,

Quoting PurrBall, reply 16There seems to be a little bug in the WinCustomize forums now, don't know if it existed earlier:

I've edited the title to fix it, may take a bit of time for the caches to refresh.

Still seeing it on new articles.

Um ...

Did I miss the announcement about the links being provided to the source forum on replies and original posts?

I just noticed this and want to say I think it's great. I think this has been something that's been asked about for close to three years now. I'm glad to see it finally implemented.
