Battles - should you have the option of AutoResolve/Battle with every enemy you fight?

I find that on certain occasions (very random) my Units just kill the selected enemy without giving me the Option of going into the Battle (actually fighting). I've been learning spells but can't use them. 

Once my guys killed the enemy I get the screen that you usually get after a battle, telling me how many hits there were etc.

Will this affect the leveling up of my Champions? Do you have a better chance of gaining XP when doing the battle and not Auto Resolve?

I only bought the game yesterday, maybe this is the way its supposed to be? 

Beside from this everything has been running smoothly. Reached 147 turns in first game without any issues (that I know of?)
