Hey there - here are a few things i noticed about the game that made it alot more fun when i understood the various things in it.

CITY BUILDING!

dont spam out houses in all cities - each house takes on of your precious food income ! - save these for cities you want to rank up! - like if you have a city with arcane temple and you wanna rank it up with loads of arcane bonuses in the various city levels!

Alot of structures requires high city levels! but if you spammed out houses in all your cities you might be hard pressed at getting it

Dont build work shops and such in all cities - i would focus on Arcane - merchant - tech building in most cities!

Town Hall <-----Important!!!
the town hall functions as a new CITY CENTER - so it produces a influence circle also! - with this you can plant a city at a narrow pass - and build buildings in a straight line to cover the pass - and place the town hall at the other end - and voila! big influece ring covering the entry point!

Essence temple <-- a must have for your high ranked cities as it increases all your essence units ( PER TEMPLE) so for each temple you gain you units become psychotic!

SPELLS!

The chain lighting is very good for a soverign/caster to spam out death to many units - 2 casters can devestate almost anything in one round

Burning touch (or some name like that) is very very good for single targets! let them walk close and zap them for TWICE your int damage - ive yet to see something survive a hit from this (apart from a miss)

Teleport with friends (dont research this currently ) as its serves no purposed currently (its identical to the low level teleport (i think originally stardock wanted teleport to only work on the caster - and teleport with friends worked on a intire stack

Deflect is good if you have a good army unit - as it prtevents counter attack for that round.

Units

always try to have a pioneer with your soverieng as it can place down a new city when you are FAR away from your cities - and this allows for the soverign to teleport to new locations and bring in new troops to a area -

Pionneer bloom tactic -

make a new pioneer with horses - make it run down to a new area - if such is located that i far away and have many resourches- same time build up several pioneers at home - when the new city is build teleport the new pioneers +escorts to the city and bloom out and take it all.

TRADE

be sure to trade your stuff to the netural cities - they pay good initially and if  you got plenty of mats (which i always seem to have) you can get a cool 1000 gil from them

overview of units!

This was the golden ticket for me that i noticed this - Your unit bar and city bar out to the left - each unit/city has a yellow ring around it - THIS MEANS (i have move units left / i am not building anything!)

this made it alot easier to move things and coordinate things for me! instead of pushing tab and shift -c

research

MAGIC my friends - you gain access to more spell types /including your faction spells life/death/summoning!
HOUSES! - increased prestiege from houses - now they make you draw in people to the cities faster!
SQUADS - make your army very strong - though exspensive.

thats about it from me - do post your own golden bits of knowlegde

How do you teleport?

Teleport using the Teleport Spell.  While in the strategic view, highlight a stack containing a caster hero that has a minimum of 5 mana currently available.  Open your spellbook and cast the teleport spell, then click on any tile where you have influence.  Your stack should teleport to that location at a cost of 5 mana and zero movement points.

Why are you knocking him for trying to help other new players? It's a good, helpful post for people still learning the game, even if the advice isn't 100% accurate.

I was getting close to making a similar post.  I do all of these things.

Also, using that Organized + Adventurer trait with Sovereign -really- helps.  If you got that route, be sure to buy every cloak, ring and mount you can to make your Sovereign and his/her entire party even faster!

Also, summoned monsters REALLY help.  They're stronger and tougher than troops, have as much health as a stack of troops (but if they lose health, you don't permanently lose a troop -- just heal up in a city and they'll get fully restored!) and best of all cost no gold to maintain!  They are really great escorts for all your exploring units.  I generally get a stack of heroes I've recruited with the sovereign ... at my earliest convenience, I will Imbue the champions with the highest INT (so that, as they get experienced and have more mana, that strengthens their spells they cast).  Its best to Imbue a recruited hero with a high INT right after recruiting them, that way you can up the new Hero-caster's mana at their first level-up.  As soon as they have a mana pool of at least 5 so they can cast Summon Familiar and Teleport, I generally let them part from my sov's stack to do their own thing, cover more ground that way.  When I start getting summoned critters costing 15 or more mana, I will let the 5-mana Familiars serve mostly as city guards as they get obsoleted by the higher level summoned critters.

Big kudos for this thread!  This should be the basis for a beginner's tutorial guide.

Agree - i tried to use summoned monsters and was mildly shocked to say the least - Infernal demon a 20 mana monster at level 1 had 45 health and mana and it could do a allround massive attack -

and yes . i regret now not havng organized and adventurer ! i would put all points into movement with the soveriegn and just feed books and potions to keep up with the other stats.

also i noticed using shortsword / rings that increase combat speed also helps with spell casting (heh - bit odd )
