As said in title, if you disband caravan, trade route it already made stays, and still gives bonus to food to both cities.
Had this happen also with a caravan destroyed by monsters. i was unable to re-build a caravan unit in the associated city.
In case of disband, caravan can be build again.
I declared war on someone I had trade routes going to. I instantly lost all the food bonus, of course ... but my trade caravans kept going and I couldn't build new ones to start trading with another civ!
clearly there's some glitchiness in caravans! doh
