I do not have the game, so sorry if my idea is off, but I have read about how some people want more abilities for their units. What do people think about being able to train abilities in the unit design? For example, you want some durable archers, so you give a guy a bow, some light armour, and the ability "Dodge", which has a % higher chance to avoid a blow. Or the ability "Endure", to survive with 1 health after what would have been a killing blow.
If you want powerful archers, equip the bow and light armour, and "Critical" or something, which does % more damage a shot. Possible more advanced options involve group dynamics, such as the "volley" command I read about. I don't know how it functions though, but to make my own idea for it, it would maybe increase accuracy and damage depending on the number of archers in a group? Accuracy increases because a volley of arrows is probably more likely to hit someone at least.
As for the cost, maybe you can have something similar to Sovereign creation, where you pay for points to "buy" abillities, armour, and weapons for your units, or just pay directly for an ability. So possibly, you can pay tens of thousands of gold and get a super unit with every single ability, one that is able to survive a killing blow, hit for critical, almost impossible to hit with all the dodge increases, extremely strong with defense and offense increases, and etc. I read that unit customization doesn't add much, so I'm wondering if this will help the issue.
Thoughts, comments? Thanks.
