Hello my fellow Modders and friends,

As I'm sure you'd all like to know, work on the Dragonlance Mod is progressing slowly but surely. I've been plugging away on the world map and some custom tiles (though the tile editor keeps crashing on me). Realistically I'm still at least a month or two away from a 1.0 release, maybe longer if I can't find the models I need. As I've mentioned before, 3D Modeling is Not one of my strong suits. Skins, Textures, Colors, I can handle all those and even apply those to current models in game. Making decent looking New Models is somewhat beyond me though. As such I thought I would come to my fellow Modders for help. I also figure if others have Model Requests we could keep all the requests in one thread like a "Order Form" where we can request Models and when those Models are made the requests can be filled and posted in this thread.

Here are the Models I currently need. Some of these may not be needed after release but there's no way to know for sure until we have the full release and see what goodies they've been holding back from us for the full game.

Draconians: In Dragonlance there is a race called "Draconians". They are an intelligent race though they are not natural. They were made by magic and twisting the eggs of Dragons into a Dragon/Man hybrid. They have the head, wings, and tails of a Dragon with the body shape of a man. Their skin is scaly.

Minotaurs: In Dragonlance Minotaurs are a intelligent race which mainly inhabit the island nations of Mithas and Kothas. Minotaurs have a Human Body with the Head of a Bull.

Elves: In all honesty this one shouldn't be that hard. All that really needs to be done is to have pointy ears places on a standard human model.

Dwarves: Short, stocky, humans.

Kender/Halflings: Short, skinny, child-like, humans. I wonder if there will be models of children in the full game? We have all kinds of civilians walking around the cities so it would make sense that kids would be running around as well. If so I can use their model for Kender.

If anyone else has any Model Requests by all means please place them in this thread. Since I consider Kyogre to be in charge of keeping all the modding info in order maybe he will be so kind as to keep track of these as well.

I had an idea for a mod involving minotaurs.  I second that request.

Griffins, Beholders, Hydras, Unicorns, Centaurs etc.

I'm not making a mod at the moment, but if I do, I'll need all these units...

Once we get some quality models it would be handy for the community to choose the best ones and share them. A lot of Mods will end up having the same kinds of units in them anyway. Any D&D/LotR style fantasy mod is bound to have the same races more or less anyway, Elves, Dwarves, Undead, etc etc.

Minotaurs and Centaurs are the primary ones I need for a mod. Preferably models that can be equipped with torso armor, helmets and weapons.

Hey Raven, maybe we can have a general model/modding request thread for community needs? I'd like some models done but they're basically pretty generic (i.e. bolts of cloth, cauldrons, young humans etc)

BTW, I attempted to make a Draconian model for you. It was hilariously bad.

Quoting MagicwillNZ,

That's what I was thinking we could use This Thread for

That's good looking out brother, I appreciate the try I'm horndously bad with 3D modeling as well. Actually it's not so much the models that give me trouble it's that I have no idea how to tie them to any animations what-so-ever. I *might* be able to do some of the smaller items you need. I still need to find my old copy of 3DsMax though.

There are tons of Poser and DAZ|Studio freebies.  I download one every week from the DAZ newsletter, and there are forums and sites where people post their original work for download.  Most are relatively high-poly models, intended for 3D art; but it's easier to down-res a model than to make one from scratch.  Just in the past month or so I downloaded several fantasy weapons that could work in a mod.

Gotta figure a lot of people are better at or more interested in modeling than in modding the models into a mod, so this is a good idea.

A model of a real world golden eagle. Helms many many helms from real world and not like Fire and Ice with a gold lion afixed to the top, stag antlers, the dog, direwolf shaped helm. Better plate and armor based on real world and not. Maybe some different bows, crossbows, seige engines balista etc. Ships various galleys, cogs, and caravels of different shapes and sizes.

Yes, siege engines like Ballista, Catapult, Trebuchet, Battering Ram etc. would be very useful in many mods.

Indeed I agree. I think finding competent modelers is something that's going to be easier said than done sadly

I think until detailed information and tutorials become available it will be a fairly slow process to get models made that are game-ready. I'm guessing the artists making the models would need the full skill set because I doubt setting up a production line would be successful in the short term.

I've had limited 3d character modelling and animation experience through my work and while I do plan on building something for Elemental I am usually time-poor so will really only get involved for a bit of weekend enjoyment after there is enough info to make it less an exercise in 'trial and error'.

The process that a typical 3d animator will need to go through could be:

1. Character sketching. (Sketch out the character in various stances to get a feel for movement limits etc.

2. Pre 3d character sketching. (Front and side views)

3. Model building. (Building the actual model)

4. Textures. (Unwrapping the model then building the various texture maps - diffuse, specular, bump, opacity etc)

5. Boning the model. (Attaching bones to the model and attaching the nodes to the bones. Boning also requires limits to the movement of the bones. If the bones built by Stardock for their models are available then this will help a lot)

6. Animating the model. (This is the fun part. Various animations of the bones need to be made for idle, combat, death-scenes etc. Once again, if Stardock open up their animation sequences with their bones this will help a lot for the standard characters.)

7. Exporting and packaging. (The final steps to make it ready for the game.)

If I were to ask (because it is still free, not because modelers/artists are as easier to find as coders) I would ask for...

  • Ancient greece equipment (male/female human), from weapons or armours to clothes. Add some "in character" buildings.
  • As the previous petition but for chinese/japanese stuff.
  • Arcane weapons and armours ("modern" technology based on magical crystals)
  • As for "races"...
     <-- Tiefling
    <-- Catfolk
<-- Lycanthropes (in particular wolf and tiger types)
    <-- Angels

Piece of cake, right? (What? One can dream, right?)

Hey look its a 15 min centaur!

I know its pretty sad, I just did it without sketches or anything, thus why its so bad! But hey it might motivate someone to outshine me (as if that were hard lol) and do some models Now for a 15 min draconian ...

I'll be the 4th to request Minotaurs.

I'll be reworking a campaign that needs the following:

Undead - lots of undead

Naga

Minotaurs

Centaurs

Goblins

& Orcs

As far as Undead, I'm pretty sure "Undead Skeletons" are going to be in the game at launch so we might not have to worry about that one, or rather it might be easier since there will be a base "Skeleton Model" to work off of.

@CivFreak: that's pretty good work for 15 minutes

We'll probably see weapons, hair, buildings, other non-animated models first, and maybe some mesh alterations (e.g., removing part of a shirt to make it sleeveless).

I hope to have time to play with Beta 4 this weekend.  I'm still not sure modifying or importing 3D models is even possible at this point.  So my request is for someone to prove that it is possible, even with a simple mod like those I mentioned.

It will be possible once Stardock releases the conversion tools/plugins for the 3D Art programs. Frogboy made a mention of it a while back.

I also tried making a draconian few days ago.. then I realized it would have to be really low poly (probably, Elemental's models don't seem very complex to me) and I couldn't really figure out how to make this low poly and still look nice. Would need some nice textures, and I've got no idea what kind of textures would still work in Elemental.

Also, I'm kinda bad at this. Anyway, I was working on this. I added some detail later but needed so much more faces for that..

That looks real nice too. Actually low poly is ok since the models won't be seen too big anyway on the battlefield. That's great work Ok, so you and Civfreak can slug it out to see who's model gets to be in the Dragonlance Mod

I mean, doing low poly is the problem. Wings, for example, might need to be flat with fancy textures. And I'd really fancy those scaly crests on head, but I can't figure out how to do it without excessive polys. Textures are the more demanding part really. Not to mention animations.

Would love to know what kind of textures/animations Elemental models use

WoW that is awesome, I love how you did the wings Keemossi. I'd vote for Keemossi's to be in . How do I know how much poly the game can handle? I don't even know how to check how much poly's my model is composed of ... I'm using Blender 2.49 (which I love) and yeah the game's 3D assets dont seem to be high poly.

Also there was something bothering me immensly about the pic i posted, and I finally noticed it didn't have a tail lol so I worked on it a bit more and added that . Ill update the original reply since idk if adding more pics is alright with the OP.

Elemental has a modern engine so if you need to go higher poly I don't think it would be much of a problem, just don't get "too high" with it. Don't forget I'll be modding in Massive numbers for the Mod so the players get that "Epic Battle" feel. That means there will be a Ton of Draconians on screen at once for some battles.

Elemental uses Intel's Havok for it's animations. I'm pretty positive they've got a package with a converter coming so we can apply their animations to models we make in programs like Blender or 3DsMax. For textures I'm honestly not sure. As long as the Draconians have rough "scaly" skin I can do the rest with skins if need be. I'm a more than decent skinner I just have to be "motivated" to work.

You can add as many pics as you like my friend, anyone can, I don't mind so long as they're on topic with what-ever model is being worked on. You're leaps and bounds ahead of my modeling skills already so unfortunately I'm not a lot of help with answers to your questions on poly counts. You're doing great though and I can't wait to see what it looks like with a tail.

You know, there are actually "Different Kinds of Draconians" in Dragonlance so I can use BOTH of your models. That would look a lot better then simply re-coloring one model multiple times to represent the different kinds of Draconians. So, both of you keep up the Awesome job and I'll use both models
