There's a difference between sacking a city and razing it to the ground.

You don't have to research it at the moment you can press X it basically shortcuts Raze City without it being researched.

please excuse my choice of words, but to me, it does not seem like it would be difficult to light a torch start the buildings on fire if one desired a city to not be there provided there is nobody left in the town to oppose you.

That doesn't destroy everything though. Maybe if it's a small city than yes, you could just burn down the huts and other small buildings which would probably be made of wood. But in a large city there would be walls and buildings made of stone, which aren't so easily destroyed.

While entirely true, in the context of what we want to do - remove any and all support from a city and basically take them out of the proverbial equation - "Razing" a city is ridiculously easy. Especially as an seemingly omnipotent despot.

It makes sense to me. Razing a city includes destroying and burning of huts, homes, and libraries..yes, that is simple enough. But in many cases it will also include tearing down fortifications and salting the earth as it were and that requires some understanding of how these concepts work.

Ok, I was taking it from the perspective of an attacking army trying to raze a city, but you're right that a kingdom could very easily abandon a city.

To me it's just a filler for research overall, No. (I'll probably never raze a city., if I messed up I'll reload.)

In a way, yeah. They throw fortification into the same tech though and you'll likely use that at some point if you go to war. I've never tried it myself but I imagine fortifying troops could be useful, especially if you're being invaded.

Alright, that's actually a very fair point. It hadn't really occurred to me. It's fairly important to tear down defensive structures when leaving a settlement, at least in times of war.

I'm not sure it should warrant research, still, though. I can think of some stuff being hard to raze, such as concrete fortifications, but most stuff is either wood or simple stone.
