First, I must say that I am playing with 5 1/2 year old computer with 2Go Ram and a directX 9.0b card. For that reason, I play only on the cloth map with a resolution of 1280x960. And I must say that I am impressed to be able to play the whole game on my computer since at least beta 1Z.
Now, the feedback. There are surely some points that were exposed in others threads, but here is was I have experienced which may
Creation of a sovereign
I have decided to play with a custom sovereign and a custom kingdom faction.
I must say that the organized trait is very useful. But I think that the tracker talent doesn’t worth its 15 points since you can get for 5 points boots that give you the same movement increase. I am not sure if the ugly weakness is really annoying since I am able to get 4 children with that trait like others sovereigns seem to have.
Concerning the equipement, I don’t see why you would take anythig other than the bow which has a cost of 0 and allow you to kill at distance with multiple turns monsters you wouldn’t be able to kill in direct battle.
For my faction, I have choose the traits that give ythril bow and plate of the titan. Those equipments can be purchased on the item shop. But I can only use the plate of titan when designing new units, even after having researched some bows.
Main UI
On the top right bar, the toogle of the minimap is strange. It seems to be on but no minimap is displayed. I need to click twice on it to have the minimap displayed.
The hiergamenon button is nice idea, but it doesn’t seem to work correcty. When you click on it, it displays an index, but none entry is clickable. It could be great if all things you discover like monsters, NPC, sovereigns, buildings create new entries in the hieragmenon.
Concerning the empire tree, having only the champions and sovereigns is annoying when you are using pionners : you don’t know when they are idle. Sadly, there isn’t any scrolling available on that tree, contrary to the right of the screen where all notifications appear. So when you have lots of champions and cities, some cities aren’t available with the empire tree, especially since you can’t undeploy the empire tree part about champions.
It is nice to know when the build queue of a particular city is empty. But it would be nice to know easily from the empire tree when the city has no buildable tile left.
Research screen and breakthrought screen.
Knowing what improvement are unlocked is nice. It would be great to also know the minimum city level for those improvements. Unlocking a tech that give level 4 improvement while your cities are level 2 feels like wasting research points. It could be useful to have the info card available in way or an other when hovering the mouse on the improvement icons associated with the technology.
When you look at tech completed, you don't have any info card available. So you don't know what each researched tech had given to you.
Build zoom mode
As I play on the cloth map, I always enable the build zoom mode. Currently, we have improvement informations on costs, tile availability and city level. It would be nice to also know if a specific improvement require to be continuous with the city or not, as well as displaying in the info card the required buiding (like granary needs a farm, an apiary or an orchard). For the improvement that doesn’t need to touch the city, it would be nice to know if there are others requirements (like distance to the center of the city). It can be useful for knowing where to found others cities, depending of the resources available. It would be nice to know also if an improvement can be build in all cities or if there is a retriction per faction or per world.
In that mode, it would be also nice to know what tiles are completely unbuildable, like forest or cliffs, maybe through a different color. You have also an info card when choosing which improvement to build, but you haven’t any info card on improvement already build or planned to be build. This could be useful when you conquer a fallen city and see a bunch of structures that give bonus to your city but you don’t know which one.
Caravans.
We have currently no summary about the established or planned caravan path contrary to GC2. When you have lots of caravans running, you don’t know easily which cities are deserved and how.
Spells
Currently, spells can be cast by only one caster. Having multiple casters able to participate in casting a specific spell would make imbuing hero more useful, especially since the first levels can be fastly increased.
Unit screen
The unit screen displays all the characteristics useful for combat and adventuring. But you need to wait the levelling screen to know easily what are the basic characteristics. That is a bit annoying for detecting which heroes should be imbued due to their innate magic facility (high INT). It is easier to know which champion can be great warriors.
Offsprings
Unless I am mistaken, all boys have the same talents and background than their father. And for the girl, it is the same than their mother. But it is nice to see that their stats are randomized.. But it may be too much : having an offspring with 3HP or 1 DEX is really strange.
Monster lairs
Some monster lairs appear after you have researched adventuring tech. When you enter a such tile in beta 3, you either win or lost, but you don’t know what you have encountered, what was the attack rating and you can’t cancel the attack.
Unit with 0 ATK
Those units don’t defend when you enter in an opponent city and are converted to your color. That is nice for pionneer units. It is another thing for ennemy sovereign, whose function is just to assure that your oppenent has a family and heirs. These captured sovereigns have no talent and can’t be disbanded. There are using a slot in the empire tree and can’t give you offspring. The only way to use them is as scout, but their movement is only 2.
Combat
When I initiate combat, I don’t have always the screen that displays the sides of the battle. And I don’t get a battle report, explaining me how damage were dealt and how many XP I gain. This prevents to see easily how XP are gained depending on the units presents on both side.
Sometimes, one of your unit is attacked during the end of turn phase. It would be nice if a specific notification was available on the right side of the screen, allowing you to go where the battle did appeared and the outcome.
Kingdom report and Quest report
In the kingdom report, there is a quest tab. Having a book displaying the various quests and their status is nice. But the immersion will be more complete if we have the way the quest ended (especially monster killed) and the reward associated.
If you have destroyed some factions, you are still noted as war with them. It is strange to be at war with extinct factions
On books and Hieragamenon
Since we are creating a story by our play, it would really help immersion to have the various books (Hiergamenon and various part of it like quests book) continually increasing their size based on what is discovered. The spellbook is already one book. It could be nice to have also a book on the technology discovered or on the offsprings, keeping a chronological display of birth, wedding and death.
Concerning the technology, having something like the spell book to see what you have researched on the left and the benefits on the right side could be nice.
That is all for now
