How about adding a shortcut to the UI for research, by left-clicking on the tech currently being researched, where it is displayed in the bottom right corner. Seems to me clicking that should do something, and that would be a handy short to have.
Clicking the spell points in the bottom left would also be a more convenient short than the one currently in place, which requires you to have your Sov selected and the spells tab open.
