I hired a champion I started beside on turn on, then I created a city and then moved to join the champions group. As soon as my character touched the champions group it crashed to desktop.

I had the same happen to me. In my case there were four adventures I just hired. They were standing within my cities area of influence. When I sent my sovereign to join them it CTD.
