Your most epic games!

'cause you've played the game, right?

I was thinking that with all the bug reports and this and that, why don't we all share some interesting times we've had with the game instead of just complaining? Not neccessarily with beta 2, but the older ones too. I'll start with a really epic one:

Today I played a game that lasted ~3500 turns.

I had a single city on the westernmost part of the continent and was researching civilization techs, not building any soldiers or anything. All of a sudden, Lord Relias proclaimed that he intended to kill me, and took over the city in about 20 turns.

The thing was, though, that my sovereign was currently with a transport ship in the far northeastern part of the map, on the tiny ashen island with a small beach which I had "unloaded" him onto  (the map is hardcoded so you should be able to find it too, if I'm not wholly mistaken?). On this island I found two champions, one insignificant guy, but also a man called 'Solon the Gladiator'. I didn't have enough money to recruit either of them, though, so I set sail with my sovereign again.

I found a beach on the southeastern part of the continent, where I also found some twilight bees and iron ore right next to each other. I was going to found a city there, but I barely had any money so I had to go adventuring, narrowly avoiding Relias' troops. Then, when I finally had aquired some money, I went back and founded the city in the location I had intended.

Relias' seemed oblivious of the new settlement, so I bunkered up bigtime. When I had a couple of thousand gildar, I went back to the ashen little island and recruited the two champions I had found earlier, since Relias had recruited everyone else. I brought them to my city and researched alot of warfare techs, and equipped Solon the Gladiator with heavy plate armor, and gave him the sword "Lifesap" which my sovereign had found early on in the game (it has +10 attack). When he was fully equipped I sent him out to quest and gain experience.

After a while he was level 9 with a combat rating of ~450, and could move ~30 tiles per turn. This character singlehandedly took down all of Relias' cities, one after one, including the city in the far west which Relias had taken from me in the beginning. When I took over one particular city, two of Relias' champions came over to my side. They were both women, and since Relias' had taken every champion on the map except for the two I had found on the ashen island, my sovereign was still not married. I married one of the new champions, had four kids that grew up, and Lord Relias had only one little level one town left to call home.

The End.

And this is how much stuff I had at the end. 602 surplus food. I actually tried deleting all my cities and just building one city with a garden and a hut in it, and guess what? It actually upgraded all the way to lvl 5 without any additional imrovements. The "refined *insert tech type*" technologies are REALLY overpowered. 1000 people living in one building and eating 10 pumpkins.

Quite a story, eh? You could almost write a book with that story. But the most amazing part was probably that the game didn't crash a single time in a game that lasted for ~3500 turns (though I admit that at least 2000 of those were just spammed turns to increase my wealth while I was successively taking over all of Relias' cities, so it didn't take as long as it looks).

I couldn't get more that 5 cities without an out of memory error. That or alt-tabbing. I'm browsing the forums a TON now, but I'm not gonna play the game again until another patch.

A good story, for a Beta, but it's a bit ridiculous that you can get one guy to singlehandedly defeat an entire empire for you, no ? Seems to me the games needs some serious hero balance...

How did you make boats

I built a harbor but the option to make ships never came up.

This early in the AI, its not surprising that a single unit could defeat an entire empire ... or even that a single unit could defeat an empire at any stage of the game(?) ... however, the fact that his combat rating, and speed, were so powerful ... thats just crazy

combat rating of 400+ is insane.

BtW ... I think there needs to be a faster way to gain HP. I mean, 10/1 ration was a little much ... but how bout a 2/1 ratio or 4/1 ratio? After all, a single point in strength can increase your attack by several points ... while you can only increase your HP one at a time ...

I know its a balance thing but still.

Also, maybe a limit of 5 rings per Champion? I'd prefer 10 per myself, but it'd be probably better to have a 5 ring limit.

Once you've completed the wolf quest you can crush the AI. Makes for a very short game. As stated though the beta isnt the game, so I'm sure this is/will be addressed. Cant really get an epic game as eventually I hit a bug and cant continue. The bug is part of the saved game. Have gone over 1000 turns though. Can't wait for the release!!

About the rings (and other enchanted things);

It's pretty standard fantasy lore that magic items can't be kept too close to each other, which would limit the amount of rings to 2, one for each hand (as in Morrowind and WoW for example). This would be a good limit I think, since it would allow for a few powerful and expensive rings instead of a myriad of insignificant ones.

It would also mean that the distribution of magic items would become more of a strategic thing; having to choose what champions or troops are important enough to wear these rings rather than giving everyone and their grandma a magic item that barely helps them. I think enchanted items should be rare, expensive and special, something that's reserved for units like the royal guard or champions.

Certainly something that is expensive/ special ... and reserved for Royal Guards and Champions ... however at having 5 (4) rings per champion allowed, you will get a more concentrated power (super unit) for those rich or magical enough to buy a large (5-10) number of rings.

That way, if you had 10 rings, you could give 4 to your fav, 4 to his deputy, and 2 to a third .... (equipping your fav three), while under a 2 ring per Champion system, you are forced to find 5 Champions to place rings on ... and you might end up selling off some rings (or storing them) if you don't have that many combat Champions.

Alternatively, you could have Champions under level 10 restricted to 2 rings, and Champions level 10 or higher can have a max of 4 rings.

In my opinion, someone who has the ability to create 5-10 rings should be so mega-powerful that he deserves 3-5 super-units because of those rings. In my book, 5-10 rings should only exist at the end of the game where the empire is at the peak of its power.

Crystal mines that are needed for enchanted items produce 1 crystal resouce per turn, and due to the rarity of those mines, most empires will only have one crystal mine. I think that an enchanted ring should cost at least 400 crystals, making them few and far inbetween. I think they should be almost like the rings in LotR. Same thing with swords and stuff, magic item = legendary item.

This is all based on the assumption that we will be able to design our own magic items in-game, though (not just in the editor)...

Haha whats wrong with the epic rise of man to defeat an empire®? Well game balance aside, it would be cool if somehow that could be balanced (or random enough) to occur in the finished game if you get a bad beat from the beginning or something along those lines.

Thats classic MoM - Torin could do this with a few spells as well...nothing could stop him once he had a few levels

I don't mind the outcome of one dude almost singlehandedly defeating an empire ... especially considering that that empire was poorly run.

If the empire was more intelligently run, then perhaps the dude would need a little backup, no?
