I could swear I saw something a while back about how to do it, but I can't get it to work. Am I losing it ??

Anyway, I think we ought to be able to do it. And when two units are stacked together and it lets you select an item and drag it, and it LOOKS like it is moving, but releasing it over the other units doesn't change anything, then something is off. If a screen won't let you actually move items anywhere, then why have it look like you can drag them around ?

I've tried transferring swords to other heroes or children, and that seemed to work. I couldn't get patchwork armor to transfer. Discussed in this thread.

Best method I have found is to select the unit who owns the item, select "items" tab then pick the item and drag it to the icon of the recipient on the Left side of the screen. Then select that user and equip the item.

Works everytime.

I can also transfer items by moving the recipient to an adjacent tile then dropping the item on their on-screen icon. The transferred item doesn't automatically disappear from the donor's item list, I have to 'refresh' the screen (open a new list, switch to another char, etc.) to get the donor's list to update.

I just tried that with the patchwork armor I previously couldn't transfer and it worked. I had been putting the units in the same army and then dragging the item to the unit's icon in the selected army list on the lower right. Your method works much better.

Regarding passing items to chars in different tiles -- distance isn't accounted for. I can pass items from across the game world, just need to zoom out enough so that both donor/donee are on the same screen. Items do pass, and equipping passed item changes the donee's stats (defense in this case, as I passed the armor) so the exchange is real.

Just tried again -- stacking units and right-dragging to the icon at the bottom of the screen. Worked. Before I was left-dragging.
