[crash] Game hangs on load screen

I had what I thought was a run-of-the mill soft CTD during Turn 1 of a new game. Now the game will not load past the initial loading screen. I have let is sit for long periods of time and it never finishes loading to the main menu or shows any errors, and requires the use of the Task Manager to end the program. I have tried everything I could think of and could find in the forums to fix the problem with no luck.

This also happens to me.  Usually when trying to load a saved game, but sometimes on a new game.  It seems to work better and is more stable when run in windowed mode and with IE running on another window for some reason.  The CPU having to work harder by running multiple programs seems to keep it from hanging, which is weird to me.

No luck after reinstall. The game still gets stuck at the initial loading screen prior to the intro movie and main menu, leading me to have to force close it in the Task Manager. Bummer!
