I went to check an email while the game was running. I hit the "windows" key to minimize the game. Once I brought the game back up to play the map had disappeared. All that was left were the player images. See image link below

Yep, going in and out of Elemental while playing is known to be borked. That's specifically alt-tab, but I'm guessing the mechanics of minimizing are the same.
