On initial startup game chose 1024x768 - my screen resolution is 1680x1050 which it should have picked up from desktop resolution.
Subsequent entry into the game is fine once this was set in options.
Not a bug.

I noticed this as well, to be honest. I didn't think it was a bug, just something probably over looked due to the removal of the graphical stuff. Should probably be included, though.
I have found no game to choose the native resolution right away. I think it has to do with the fact that any default choice might make it impossible for you to set any options, so the game starts with a low resolution.
