Ok, what I understand is that if I pre-order this game to norway I will have to pay 20-25 dollars extra. Basicly, it will be a lot cheaper to buy it in stores when it somes out in Europe.

Of course I could get it on impulse only, but I want to have the game on a cd, in a nice dvd case. Makes me feel I actually own the game insted of only being allowed to use it. The problem is the beta testing. This is one of the few games that I would actually want to help beta test. It's a year untill it comes out and I'm all giddy about it already.

My real question is this, will I be able to help beta test the game witout having to pre order it? Because if not, totally sadface over here.

"when" is the important keyword. What would you do if Europe retail is behind in months (like it was the case with Sins of a Solar Empire) ?

And don't forget that exchange rate and local pricing can twist a lot the result about what version is cheaper. For information, preorder won't be charged before beta starts. So you can't take advantage of the exchange rate available today.

will I be able to help beta test the game witout having to pre order it?

No

20-25 dollars is equal to 140-160NOK, yeah it is more exspensive, but it does depend on where you live. If you live in a city and it is easy to get to the store no problem, but i have to spend 200 nok(50 nok by train) driveing just to get to a games store. So it depends on how much money you have, and how  much you want to beta test the game.

Typical differences from a retail game and a beta is that a beta has lots of bugs, and are terribly balanced.(just think of retail EA rts games v1.0(balance), or sacred 2 v1.0(bugs)).

Ps the last game of stardock took ages before it reached the stores  in europe, it took such a long time that i forgot about it. But you do know that preordering that PC game is still no more exspensive then it would be to buy a console game.

hm maybe i will preorder the game, so i do not forget about it.

I've yet to see GalCiv2 in most stores I know, and I still have never seen the Dark Avatar or Twilight of the Arnor expansions. After initially pirating the game, I looked for a very long time (since I want a physical copy) but eventually had to resign to get one, and bought it off Impulse.

I wouldn't presume to know the situation in Norway (most likely largely dependant on where you live, as described in KnutAreMykland's post), but you're probably better off with a digital download, sad but true.

I'd say it's worth just getting the digitial download only. When galciv 2 came out I bought digital download + box, and I have still never opened the box. It's packed away somewhere in storage still in the plastic wrap. Since then every time I've bought a game online I've gone for the digital download only. And with Impulse I don't feel like I'm just being allowed to borrow it. I feel like I own it, but the installation files are being safekept against loss and damage for me. I can download it on any computer I want, anywhere at any time. And the installation is kept up to date with all the patches. If you've never done digital download only, I suggest you try it - you might be surprised. If you have, and have already made up your mind, then ignore this post

And moreover you can back up the files on a dvd. So you always have a physical copy. Stardock as proven it's trustworthy. I have downloaded the game a few times for my new pc and the old ones and it's just great having a digital copy. I don't really care about the physical copy anymore. I just backit up once I have it.

GC2 came and went back around its initial release. However, there is a new Kalypso release of DA+TA and of DL+DA+TA now at retail in Europe.

I don't really need the box but i preordered with it. I'll be able to cuddle it, show it to other people,...

Yeah, I keep hearing stories about it. I'm just saying that *I* have never seen anything.

if i preorder the digital download +box, will the digital download be a global release? I am from Norway you see, and games can sometimes come quite early here and some come very late!

Well, usually games from StarDock come very late to Europe. It could change for Elemental, but I wouldn't wager a krone on it.

And afaik digital download + box is always a global release, but somebody official should verify that.

Norway is magical that way. You usually get all the games at the same time Sweden does, but sometimes, it takes a month or so until it crosses the border.

It's "krona" (we just haven't told the norwegians, yet, so ssshhh).

But yeah, as far as I know, Digital Download is always global (why wouldn't it be?). The box is shipped from the Americas, so you won't have it the same day as everyone else. You'll likely have to wait a couple of days.

Again, I may look fancy and official in this suit of mine (I always wear a suit, you see) (except when naked), but you'd be better off hassling an official with a stick.

Direct-order boxes ship as soon as we get them made, yes (though international shipping can take a week or two). Downloads are available immediately at launch, regardless where you're at.

I'm not sure what we've got planned with Elemental as far as international retail distribution goes, at this point. AFAIK we're going through Atari this time for Demigod in Europe and Asia, which should give us more control and flexibility than distributors past. If that goes well then I'd expect to see the same thing for Elemental, which would probably make it a lot more likely for localized versions to come out close to or alongside the native English version.

"Krona" sounds cooler in english it does, but btw, for those interested "krone" means "crown" wich is awsome to have as currency, like living in a fantasy novel or something

Awsome. If the downloadable version is available immediately then things are looking up up up!

But please no "Norwegian version" I hate that crap  . It's like you are so used to everything being in english that when something suddenly is in Norwegian it totally ruins the mood.

In case you missed it, I'm Swedish. We're using "krona", which means "crown" aswell.

I had actually misset that  Oh, but I should have remembered it was you gave me that swedish message, that time, for that thing *wink* *wink* "Ditt namn äger! "

Just you remember, Norway liberated itself from the evil grip of you Swedes over a hundred years ago! And if you try anything our royal family will kick your royal families royal asses.

But yeah, as far as I know, Digital Download is always global (why wouldn't it be?).

According to shitty companies (aka, not stardock), it wouldn't be available worldwide for the same reason they have region locking...

For example sony says "the sale of Japanese PSPs to the UK could hurt their ability to exploit the "excitement and anticipation of the market.""

In retrospect, not the best decision of all-time, but how were we to know that all that worthless coastline had huge amounts of oil?
