Hasting's has an introductory membership offer: not only do you get a free 2-liter of Coke (long gone, now), but you have 1/2 off movie rentals for the first two week. That first week was taken up by a spring break and a lot of G and PG movies (my favorite of which was Wallace & Grommit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit; I especially liked the way the 3-year old I was hanging with said the movie title).
This week, now that I'm alone again, I've been renting more grown-up movies. (No, I'm not that lonely.)

The last batch was 40-year Old Virgin, the unrated version of Dukes of Hazzard, and the Ultimate Avengers. Alright, that's a dubious grouping for me to claim 'more grown-up' status, but bear with me. I was looking for dumb, goofy comedies, and I picked well. I wanted the sort of mind-numbing 'fun' that I expected from these movies, and I wasn't disappointed.

Dukes of Hazzard was certainly fluff. I enjoyed it, but it definitely wasn't something I could call "good".

40-Year Old Virgin had an odd blend of 'Something About Mary' style raunchy comedy and romantic comedy.

Ultimate Avengers... okay, it's not a dumb comedy, but it is a cartoon. Based on the Marvel comics series The Ultimates, which has been described as "Not your father's Avengers," this is another attempt at a grimmer, grittier book (and a new stab at that in the cartoon realm). It was neat to see (versions of) these characters in action: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Giant Man, Wasp, and Black Widow. I enjoyed it, but I'm a giant comic book geek, so take that with a grain of salt.

Oh wow, we've been doing a bit of movie renting lately too...my husband suggested the 40-year-old virgin. He described it as a movie about an innocent, childlike man who respected women so much that he had no interest in defiling them. Sounded innocent enough to me, right? HA! I couldn't make it through the first five minutes. Definitely a movie for single guys with their heads in the gutter.Just my opinion. Looks like I should stick with the G movies.

I miss Hastings. They have everything...books, movies rentals (cheap!), CDs, all that.

We're stuck with Blockbusters here. We have a movie pass (nearly $40 a month!) but the selection is really poor. If you don't get there at 10 on Tuesday morning, you're not going to see a new release for 2 weeks. I still haven't been able to get a copy of Jarhead.

OK, I have seen Ultimate Avengers, I think. We rented it to watch with the boys.

PS - I had high hopes for 40 Year Old Virgin, but it was more annoying than funny to me. Disappointing cause I love Steve Carrell (sp?).

"40 Year Old Virgin" was quite funny. I was happy with it. We bought "Ultimate Avengers" for our boys (including Dad).

I recently watched "Shaun of the Dead" for the first time. Darkly hilarious. Very over-the-top gorefest, but it's a zombie movie... what did I expect? ::

Shaun of the Dead was great. Maybe in my top 20 movies ever. I loved it.

There are now supposedly free movie rental coupons waiting at Hastings for me -- a sort of trite apology.

They'll be there till hell freezes over.

This is war. I will not rest till I have driven Hastings from this town.

BUT...one time I forgot about some movies for a really super long time, and my overdue fees were over $30 and I got them to wipe it out completely.

I love Hastings.

I've seen worse. At the movie rental kiosk at the Shopette at DLI, a soldier approached the clerk with a sob story about how his roommate lost a VHS tape a few weeks ago, that he had looked for it in vain, and had finally given up and wanted to pay for it.

He was charged for the late fees ($3/day) as well as for the VHS tape, at the cost to the store (lower three digits, as it was only available for rental at that time, and not for sale). He owed them over $200 for a very bad movie.

He didn't get it wiped, either. And he got yelled at by his PSG.

Well, thanks for the brief reviews. I haven't been renting movies later. I really miss doing that and have to start again. Friday nights were usually our popcorn and movie/game rental nights. I haven't seen any of those you listed here. I'm curious to see the 40 yr old virgin but didn't hear any words of disappointments from other reviews I've seen. Hmmm, now I can't wait to rent it! As for the Ultimate Avengers, I'm old school cartoon and comic fan and remember the days gone by when there was no 'Ultimate'!! Kids are fun to hang out with aren't they? And then when you have that time alone, that's soooo priceless!

The funniest things that I saw from 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' were in the special features section. Setting up the 'chest smile' and the sketch between the two guys in the recliners were the best.

The title Wallace and Grommit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit was challenging to my girl and her cousin... I don't think they ever got the title right once, and it was just endless variations on some key words only when referred to.

I thought 40 year old virgin was hilarious. I guess that's just my dumb sense of humor. I like stupid funny. Cheap laughs have me rolling. I mean the drunk chic puking on him - classic. The action figures - too funny. When they showed why he didn't have sex - hilarious. and of course the famous chest waxing scene.

I didn't see Dukes of Hazard though I loved that show when I was a kid. Mainly because I was in love with Bo Duke. My Duke's of Hazard T shirt was one of my prized posessions. I just can't see that other dude being Bo.

I just watched Kicking and Screaming which I got for my boys but I thought it was still pretty funny and cute. No - pop coming out of my nose hilarious moments but still funny.

Oh and I loved the new pride and prejudice. When I'm not watching stupid funny I like costume dramas. How is that for polar opposites. Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy - my favorites.

We have Netflix and over the last few weeks this is what we've watched:

The Weatherman - sucked.

Walk The Line - it was okay. I liked it.

Jarhead - pretty good.

The Visitation - don't bother. Not as good as I had hoped.

I have thre Wallace and Grommit movies coming this weekend. I LOVED the Were-Rabbit - so much so that I bought it!

On HBO et al we've been watching Dodgeball, Shaun Of The Dead, Napoleon Dynamite - all hilarious.

I LOVED the 40 year old virgin, Angela, and I'm a 36 year old mom who most certainly doesn't have her head in the gutter. You know, after reading your latest article I would like to respectfully suggest that you're the one with issues, not the rest of the world.

Sorry, Pseudo. I just couldn't take any more and remain silent.

I liked it, but only because it was kind of different. It stood out a little bit. I'm not a big Nicholas Cage fan, though.

I haven't seen Walk The Line yet, either. Still not in.

Haha...I guess I'm in the minority about 40YOV. It was funny at parts but it seemed kind of forced and overdone...like, waaay over the top. The premise was cute enough.

I first saw the third one, A Close Shave, in college at an animation film festival. That's the one with Shaun the Sheep. The other two are quite good as well.

If you have the Were-Rabbit (akulaboy argued with me that it was Bear-Rabbit), the extra features are very worth watching. They go into the backstory of the man who came up with the characters and all the work he and others had done on the films. Good stuff.

And I think you know I'm not likely to smack you down for speaking your mind, d.

I saw Dukes in the theatre. Fluff, yes, but I admit I laughed. Watching the virgin movie I was drunk and don't remember much of it because I do remember having a side conversation about politics. I agree that Weatherman sucked. I'm not a Nic Cage fan, but there are movies of his I like. Raising Arizona for one. I like Con Air, as well.

Because you have some very skewed world views and you judge other people a LOT. You act as if we're all fucked up heathens who are out flashing our flesh and fornicating with our minds in the gutter. Read your own articles, Angela, it's all there.

And no, you didn't make my list. I love you as a human being, and i feel sad for you because you alienate yourself. That's all.

I let my ire get the better of me here. This conversation is now causing me samsara, so I'm going to try an do the enlightened thing and not comment on this particular subject anymore.

Oh, and I meant to add that I have a Shaun The Sheep backpack. I even knitted him a scarf.....yeah, I know, I'm sad and pathetic.

One more thing - I watched 'The Lord Of War' and thought it was okay. I preferred 'Matchstick Men' - I thought that was brilliant.

Gone in 60 seconds. Definitely my favorite Nick Cage movie. Of course it has nothing to do with the cars.........right.

I've been watching a bunch of movies too now that I'm stationed off by myself, but I've been buying up the bargain racks. It's not that much more than renting, plus you get to keep the thing. Recent movies include One Flew Over the Cukoo's nest, Time Bandits, UHF, and Sideways. You've gotta love when she bashes him in the head with that helmet........
